You Loved Our Brown Sugar Boba… So What’s Next?
Our Brown Sugar Milk Boba recipe has been a fan favorite, and we’ve been getting one question a lot lately:
“What other sweeteners can I use with True Boba?”
We hear you, and we’ve been testing a bunch of options so you can switch up your boba game without losing control of ingredients or flavor. Whether you’re watching sugar intake or just love experimenting with new combos, we’ve got something sweet for everyone.
Meet Your New Sweetener Options 🍯🍁🍬
Here are six sweeteners we’ve tested with True Boba, each with its own vibe. For all of them, we used ½ cup of water to make a syrup—same as our brown sugar recipe—but feel free to tweak the amount to match your tastebuds.
1. Brown Sugar
6–12 tsp per ½ cup water
Rich, deep, and caramel-like. This is the classic boba syrup flavor—warm, comforting, and perfect with dairy or oat milk.
2. Stevia
2–8 tsp per ½ cup water
A calorie-free, plant-based option. Stevia has a light herbal note and a very sweet punch, so start low and taste as you go.
3. Honey
3–10 tsp per ½ cup warm water
Naturally sweet with subtle floral and tangy notes, honey pairs beautifully with almond or soy milk for a smooth, café-style tea.
4. Maple Syrup
3–8 tsp per ½ cup water
Cozy and woodsy, maple syrup adds a fall-inspired twist. Try it with oat milk or chai for a next-level flavor experience.
5. Palm Sugar
1–3 tsp per ½ cup water
Mild and a little nutty, with earthy undertones. It sweetens well in small amounts—great if you want flavor without overdoing the sugar.
6. Monk Fruit Extract
3+ tsp per ½ cup water
Another zero-calorie option, monk fruit is super sweet with a clean aftertaste. It dissolves best in warm water.
Tips to Customize Your Boba Like a Pro 🧋
Want to create your perfect boba experience? Here are a few tricks we swear by:
✨ Pair sweeteners with milk styles:
Try oat milk + maple syrup for a cozy combo, or almond milk + honey for a smooth, subtly sweet finish.
✨ Make a syrup:
Use your favorite sweetener + ½ cup of water. Stir until fully dissolved, then mix into your boba.
✨ Warm or cold?
Most sweeteners dissolve best in warm water, especially palm sugar, monk fruit, and honey. Make sure it's warm not hot! For cold sweetening, try maple syrup or stevia.
✨ Taste-test in small batches:
Start with the low end of the ratio and add more sweetener to taste. Everyone’s sweet spot is different—literally.
Reminder: Unsweetened = Still Delicious
Some of our True Boba fans actually prefer it unsweetened, especially when using naturally sweet milks like vanilla oat or coconut. It’s a subtle, clean way to enjoy boba—especially if you’re cutting back on sugar or just like to keep things light.
